I have found this blog to be the last thing which i worry about, and i rarely post here.<br />
<br />
It's not as if my quail will cease to exist with this blog gone. The only thing that I'm saying is that it is unlikely that i will ever post again. Blogger has started to bore me, although it's a wonderful blog medium. I simply do not have the time, and the time which i do have i choose to spend doing other things.<br />
<br />
So thanks for following! It was fun while it lasted.<br />

My dad and I have been working on this run. It measures 6x2 feet. It turned out quite lovely, dont you think!<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
The quail are slightly confuzzled by the move, but getting on fine. Today, and the day before yesterday they layed <u>7</u> eggs. Quite impressive, I must say for a bird weighing barely 12 ounces!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrKVjzp0H32u7H7zfU8B-TBCIPOvJHwaQjU8FaCw_j8U_zaETUvxgn-eUvHheg-i0HMxwaWQ9IaiYwgeQX9b4t4IWQI-wVX9DrjnuY-FJ5-QeaLa2_04o7v8VhpxZj45cSRZWPS6YTizg/s1600/IMG_1338.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrKVjzp0H32u7H7zfU8B-TBCIPOvJHwaQjU8FaCw_j8U_zaETUvxgn-eUvHheg-i0HMxwaWQ9IaiYwgeQX9b4t4IWQI-wVX9DrjnuY-FJ5-QeaLa2_04o7v8VhpxZj45cSRZWPS6YTizg/s320/IMG_1338.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
While getting them in and out of this new run, I have encountered a few problems. While attempting to move them, both Dove and Loli escaped. It was a panicked moment, but they both are very calm so i returned them to their hutch in a few seconds.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
So while this set up currently isn't too attractive, with the propane tank propping the greenhouse door open, and the dirty pink-whatever, I think it will look very nice once plants start to grow.<br />

<br />
It is commonly known that a bird cannot lay more than 1 egg in 24 hours. But can that rule be bent?<br />
<br />
The reason i ask, is because i have found lots of eggs lately. More than it would seem possible for a tiny little bird to lay.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiu6Lpvpf9W8yI3e9nfCS4lNlymyOEK0-C-9jBoMl8bDrCUJxazF0QqCQBB8YyjcaQL_BjWUL7iLShP1vVE6CPHFI6fpDsZmGKGMeZrjfAszayVn6QBvHx4XKr-okx-cjdCzKpGRSIGRok/s1600/IMG_1065.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiu6Lpvpf9W8yI3e9nfCS4lNlymyOEK0-C-9jBoMl8bDrCUJxazF0QqCQBB8YyjcaQL_BjWUL7iLShP1vVE6CPHFI6fpDsZmGKGMeZrjfAszayVn6QBvHx4XKr-okx-cjdCzKpGRSIGRok/s320/IMG_1065.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I collected this many eggs in 2 days...<br />

These little white birds always surprise me with what they lay!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioJYNoaa0WtiSx1MOZ2UCrg9sv3n4cVqKmgY3BEqMb4EUAbX_3X76_NOEaB86ez4PrvJk1ivNV__mpdBjWJcKx612QWGWFeyY88Q8vVC7x506Eb4ZVIkqLCpBX7Qr_n_K0wwSqQdQLhd4/s1600/IMG_1070.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioJYNoaa0WtiSx1MOZ2UCrg9sv3n4cVqKmgY3BEqMb4EUAbX_3X76_NOEaB86ez4PrvJk1ivNV__mpdBjWJcKx612QWGWFeyY88Q8vVC7x506Eb4ZVIkqLCpBX7Qr_n_K0wwSqQdQLhd4/s320/IMG_1070.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So it's a curious question. Are they in fact laying more than one egg, per bird, per day. Or is it just my sloppy counting.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Either way, i'm not complaining! :) </div>

So, upon my return from vacation, asides from 6 healthy quail, i found a lot of eggs. Nearly 2 dozen. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
With so many eggs, i decided that i needed to use them up before they went bad. So, hardboiled eggs were an obvious, tasty choice. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is the recipe i used!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #414449; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;"></span></div>
<div style="border-bottom-width: 0px; border-color: initial; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-top-width: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 10px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
Fill a saucepan with enough water to cover the eggs and an inch more. Place the saucepan on a burner over high heat. Carefully place the eggs in the water. Don’t crowd them.</div>
<div style="border-bottom-width: 0px; border-color: initial; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-top-width: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 10px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
Cover the pan and bring the water to a boil. As soon as the water comes to a boil, turn off the heat. Leave the pan covered on the burner for five minutes.</div>
<div style="border-bottom-width: 0px; border-color: initial; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-top-width: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 10px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
Immerse the eggs in cold water, or better yet an ice bath, to stop the cooking process. When they are cool, crack the shell by tapping it on a hard surface and peel. The membrane between the shell and the white is a bit thicker than chicken eggs, but not too much so. Serve with salt to taste. Store leftover peeled eggs in cold water in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvTxXV7yqc0t2VdWJexc-vJHVoXEgWueQ_YcknP8HAyuk5dTQIdlZGbkGvCvvMabw0bwZOI487lcPYxftwWv549KYGKh_SnkZF2SLJ6fylfiPt6F-KgbcLUKlmDJFZphITgl9Zb9nVzAI/s1600/IMG_7608.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvTxXV7yqc0t2VdWJexc-vJHVoXEgWueQ_YcknP8HAyuk5dTQIdlZGbkGvCvvMabw0bwZOI487lcPYxftwWv549KYGKh_SnkZF2SLJ6fylfiPt6F-KgbcLUKlmDJFZphITgl9Zb9nVzAI/s320/IMG_7608.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
They turned out beautifully, and in my opinion, much tastier than their chicken-egg counterparts! They are definately much creamier tasting, with less of a strong eggy flavor. Delicious!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

My quail are at home. I gave them plenty of food and water, and my neighbor is checking on them. I'm sure they will be fine :)<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The quail? They're good. Stella is fat and happy, laying a lot! Spaz, is spazzy as usual. Dusty is fluffy in the cold. Lolipop is super sweet and lovable. Dove is as curious as can be! And Cotton? He is at the bottom of the pecking order, and very tiny. But i think he's happy to be with his friends. </div>

At first, i had no particular reason to worry about the quail- our greenhouse is very sturdy. But then i noticed our neighbor over by the greenhouse, waving his arms.<br />
I ran out in my Pajamas to see that one of the quail, Lolipop, had escaped- The greenhouse door was being bent by the rain. After a few tries, i caught her quite easily, and returned her to the greenhouse.<br />
However all of the little quail were running around nervously, soaking wet- one of the top panels of the greenhouse had blown out.<br />
As I tried to move them into their hutch so they would be safe, the front door of the greenhouse blew out as well. After a while of frantically chasing them in my Pj's, i got them safe into their hutch with plenty of food and water.<br />

<br />
Quail eggs have a very similar flavor to chicken eggs, though a little bit creamier and milder in flavor. As healthy as chicken eggs are, quail eggs are even healthier! Packed with vitamins, minerals, good fats and healthy cholesterol, they are practically a superfood! Plus they apparently help suppress allergies.<br />
<br />
Here is how i ate my quail eggs;<br />

I'm so sorry how i haven't posted for such a long time. I have really been quite busy with a little bit of everything. Plus, a lack of having a camera has prevented me from doing much.<br />
<br />
I realize my last post sounds like a sad ending to my blog, but it isn't at all! It's more of a new beginning, going along with the new year. It is totally different in the greenhouse now- much calmer with less quail. They seem happy, i think.<br />

It was less enthusiastic than usual. They didn't crawl all over my boots, and hop up and down begging for food. Brave little Calico didn't approach me with his big amber eyes. Spice didn't spook and fly into the wall.<br />
<br />
Then i saw them.<br />
<br />
Calico, Cricket, Charlie and Spice died in the night. I don't know how or why, but there was no blood. I hope they felt no pain.<br />

<br /></div>
<div>
At first, Spaz began to bully them. So I put him in the greenhouse. Next, Charlie became a bully. So i put him in separate quarters. Then Cotton, started picking on the others.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
That was when i realized they were not happy in their hutch. They didn't have enough room, and they were not happy.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It was terrible to see them get hurt. Dove and Dusty were very badly injured by the others. So i decided i had to change something.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheBQEw1dl2lqJ3Yhqip6VniP6rDlpEaeJUhPKT4f4IkAKjziy15XACEfx_rUEsbTVyqBwjWDi3gcee-fcc2OZOPH-6c2fnC12ZVBxp_EDmHFDcZwQdrXu1Mgm9B6f9vH9ORT1Wc1TIdFE/s1600/IMG_6806.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheBQEw1dl2lqJ3Yhqip6VniP6rDlpEaeJUhPKT4f4IkAKjziy15XACEfx_rUEsbTVyqBwjWDi3gcee-fcc2OZOPH-6c2fnC12ZVBxp_EDmHFDcZwQdrXu1Mgm9B6f9vH9ORT1Wc1TIdFE/s320/IMG_6806.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
So i moved them to the greenhouse.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnUd8kBFebykhFUCyboiY5kK-MypE8u7fjKsxzqQHyJxfNcHda9_VRO3EtL5I6vpjRYvoNGXKP8eklVg5k6B96qsi9_uS3hkXRpf7j9hQmBs1JROf8E7Qdikyso4TuTrfdJr3DEcQAHjY/s1600/IMG_6807.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnUd8kBFebykhFUCyboiY5kK-MypE8u7fjKsxzqQHyJxfNcHda9_VRO3EtL5I6vpjRYvoNGXKP8eklVg5k6B96qsi9_uS3hkXRpf7j9hQmBs1JROf8E7Qdikyso4TuTrfdJr3DEcQAHjY/s320/IMG_6807.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
All of them.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It isn't the prettiest out there, with all of the compost, watering systems and black plastic to keep the ground unfrozen. But they are in <i>heaven </i>out there. They still have squabbles, and sometimes they chase each other. But they never hurt each other, if one of them wants to get away from the others, they get away. This is only for the winter, and i'm not sure what i am going to do with them in the summer.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But they are so happy right now...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjt79elpavUi2dlYokJ8tWhJ2Dy7RnMVMpcRX-LhgkFoKONGHZpKvWSZlYpDUvDRiN0hyfQz4joPEFlyJPMyNyOptn1jVxInc-eTpZp0XfZcW6Mp2uvTt7cGjK1nZL7Y1mr26XYGiCVgDU/s1600/IMG_6836.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjt79elpavUi2dlYokJ8tWhJ2Dy7RnMVMpcRX-LhgkFoKONGHZpKvWSZlYpDUvDRiN0hyfQz4joPEFlyJPMyNyOptn1jVxInc-eTpZp0XfZcW6Mp2uvTt7cGjK1nZL7Y1mr26XYGiCVgDU/s320/IMG_6836.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
They have compost to chow on, plenty of places to drink from, feed scattered every where, bushes to hide in. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7OeBAG-sJYwBW4dJwGywE7imt_HZRgb_yD8uTqfQGzwhTKp2as0nHWk03mPNmm8Kr71CFPitIqFsp_ZZcKcqYaXpWz9QfSUj65amDZLUK4EEqLTB2tPFF9DMNxVaFZ7x3v-RgfAkqEQ8/s1600/IMG_6841.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7OeBAG-sJYwBW4dJwGywE7imt_HZRgb_yD8uTqfQGzwhTKp2as0nHWk03mPNmm8Kr71CFPitIqFsp_ZZcKcqYaXpWz9QfSUj65amDZLUK4EEqLTB2tPFF9DMNxVaFZ7x3v-RgfAkqEQ8/s320/IMG_6841.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And also, they are much tamer. For some reason, out in the greenhouse they are so much more friendly. Even the shy ones like Spaz don't mind being picked up. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The only little bird that is still terrified of me is Spice. She is a crazy little one. While the others wait at the door to be fed, she flies into the opposite wall! She is always alright, but she is very crazy.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjipQfIeOrYmNmS3wB5PcATjuqgzuzSgymGwtMt2tmqVJSbMyLOdAvoo0u9fEd2Zli9M4WbCwyi4ZqeWVnziJd1veS1HRNRbho2FaJ4beopFhDnp_3pmvkZC5I6RP_Kz5W8eCM_mR2Tkkg/s1600/IMG_6840.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjipQfIeOrYmNmS3wB5PcATjuqgzuzSgymGwtMt2tmqVJSbMyLOdAvoo0u9fEd2Zli9M4WbCwyi4ZqeWVnziJd1veS1HRNRbho2FaJ4beopFhDnp_3pmvkZC5I6RP_Kz5W8eCM_mR2Tkkg/s320/IMG_6840.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And since they are so happy, i have had a few surprises.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Calico is a boy.</div>

So i have 5 females and 5 males... not a very good ratio at all. But they all get along, and i have only heard them crow a few times. Actually, i'm not sure if Charlie is a boy... i haven't ever heard him crow. Hmmmmmm... So i might have 6 females and 4 males. It's too bad that i won't get that many eggs, but it's okay.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
What funny little birds! Now all i have to do is wait for eggs :) </div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx_-vJU-BfC_MeepKoYLmvR8NA7KlWkZH5HDmBlKDtk4Uwj0AH8cFvjIGTE3pOLKt5CkVSj291JFCH5xCZgUgDSjzVC7c3LB9ka9y2B1n6Zh4UDKp38TMN8jIEuhjQLlOMJVbDiZogL3o/s1600/IMG_9962.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx_-vJU-BfC_MeepKoYLmvR8NA7KlWkZH5HDmBlKDtk4Uwj0AH8cFvjIGTE3pOLKt5CkVSj291JFCH5xCZgUgDSjzVC7c3LB9ka9y2B1n6Zh4UDKp38TMN8jIEuhjQLlOMJVbDiZogL3o/s320/IMG_9962.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Of course, it doesn't work like that because quail would likely just run away. So i overturned a laundry basket and put Spice and Calico in it on the ground. They seemed happy about pecking around, so i left them there for a while.<br />
<br />
When i came back, my presence must have upset Spice, because she easily slipped from between the bars, and flew away, into my neighbors yard.<br />
<br />
Obviously, i was freaking out.<br />
<br />
I quickly put Calico back in the hutch and chased after Spice with some feed in hand. She was under the neighbor's porch and i couldn't reach her, and she wouldn't come for the food. I was inches away so i tried to grab her, but she flew about 100 feet away.<br />
<br />
I went to grab a bucket to carefully shoo her into. She came really close to a some dense bushes- if she went in there, I would never be able to find her.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ703BOeHcHcPKTzQV8hg-VhclolmZDLaiUnR083NhBw0tOMCGdRu0ai67YfLuKxO1xsdJaCRXI3NY83AtDqSTfs4HTyqyniulC2M2W3bEd6ptY0UI87YP92kbVMrx09NTkldg0H3oNZA/s1600/IMG_9992.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ703BOeHcHcPKTzQV8hg-VhclolmZDLaiUnR083NhBw0tOMCGdRu0ai67YfLuKxO1xsdJaCRXI3NY83AtDqSTfs4HTyqyniulC2M2W3bEd6ptY0UI87YP92kbVMrx09NTkldg0H3oNZA/s320/IMG_9992.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
The next time she flew, she flew into my bucket, scared but unharmed. Then, looking ridiculous, i exited my neighbor's yard with a bird and a bucket.<br />
<br />
I returned her to the hutch, and snipped off the tips of her wing feathers. Now she is safe and at home!<br />
<br />
That was pretty scary! But i'm glad she's okay.<br />

Here they are.<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Spaz: </span>Is the trouble maker.<b> </b>He is so mean to the other birds, so now he is living in seperate quarters. He has such a beautiful crow!<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Charlie: </span>Is the other roo, is much quieter and doesn't crow ( Yet... ). The poor guy got attacked by Spaz so he isn't very pretty right now, but he is a good little bird</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

But they are nice and cozy and they can keep each other warm in the cold, soon-to-be-winter weather.<br />

Tomorrow i am going to pick up 10-15 adult A&M ( White ) Coturnix quail. I am so very excited!<br />

I have cardboard boxes lined with shavings to bring them home in. Their hutch is set up, lined with pine needles, leaves and branches. Their food bowls are full with crumbs of feed. </div>

<br />
Well, they didn't hatch.<br />
<br />
Today was day 20 of incubation, so i turned off the incubator and cracked open all of the eggs to see what had developed inside....<br />
<br />
There where 27 eggs with nothing inside at all, and 3 with embryos that quit. Two quit on about day 7, and one quit on about day 15. It was a little sad, that none of them hatched, all thanks to my wonderful spike up to 110 degrees on the first day!<br />
<br />
But this is all a learning experience. I'm going to start back up again, with a REAL incubator and some hatching eggs. Or, maybe i will start with adult quail. We will see!<br />
<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So today i bought the hutch i will use to house my quail! It's very nice and LARGE so it will be good for plenty of quail. The dimentions are 5 feet by 2 feet so it should be <i>plenty </i>of room for 20+ birds.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsiy59zm0SXT3QP5lDA8xnzhdq0xI6foUVvhiKguxa6etowfC-fENlabd5DE5PiShA2EPAkBISsePZLSJtbLNbIoi6Ug-yhheR_MKrd4Fw-eZ5EVWU3z_6WMh9y_Bfz-3k5dRHm-jqCI4/s1600/IMG_6442.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsiy59zm0SXT3QP5lDA8xnzhdq0xI6foUVvhiKguxa6etowfC-fENlabd5DE5PiShA2EPAkBISsePZLSJtbLNbIoi6Ug-yhheR_MKrd4Fw-eZ5EVWU3z_6WMh9y_Bfz-3k5dRHm-jqCI4/s320/IMG_6442.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

I bought it from a local company, because a lot of the Hutches and cages available online seem pretty low quality. OR should i say... QUAIL-ity! Har. Har. Har. No really. I'm kidding. Don't worry.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfhjF5ftYcsbk9qKBdoHVlt4ogVUp_UjdstwhUJlY-kTuYVHwEFAVS6PVDrcvFA0oWLr-P1-6-EOsQN0-TbW2Zr5sJP544w1PY9Gl52lHUpgelX6LHQbGyiyUBtIE5yzdhj_gJ93866CM/s1600/IMG_6437.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfhjF5ftYcsbk9qKBdoHVlt4ogVUp_UjdstwhUJlY-kTuYVHwEFAVS6PVDrcvFA0oWLr-P1-6-EOsQN0-TbW2Zr5sJP544w1PY9Gl52lHUpgelX6LHQbGyiyUBtIE5yzdhj_gJ93866CM/s320/IMG_6437.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

Time for a few snazzy facts about housing Coturnix quail!<br />
<br />
<b> 1. The minimum size is 1 square foot of floor space for every quail. Some people give more space and some people give less. Many people keep their birds on only 1/2 square feet per bird. But 1 square foot is a good minimum. </b><br />
<b><br /></b>
<b> 2. The roof should be either under 18 inches high, or over 6 feet hight. </b>( This worries me slightly, because the roof of this hutch is a bit high. I might have to put padding on the roof so the little guys don't bonk their heads to hard. ) <b>The reason that you you need a lower or very high roof, is that nervous quail sometimes fly up really quickly and bonk their heads on the roof! </b><br />
<b><br /></b>
<b> 3. The wire spacing for the floor should be 1/2 inch. Any bigger spacing and the quail's little feet will fall through!</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
<b> 4. Coturnix are super cold hardy but there should be somewhere draft-free with solid sides where they can huddle away from the cold. </b><br />
<b><br /></b>
<b> 5. Having a wire floor with a pull out tray is much best- it is supposed to make cleaning much easier. Don't worry, these little birds are much better adapted to living on wire then chickens are!</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
That's all for now! The eggs hatch in 4 days :)Cloverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10715053594306540946noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8144077275389032654.post-89685258513679935282012-11-22T06:28:00.001-08:002012-11-22T06:29:22.002-08:00Candling the eggs....Today is the 8th day of incubation. The hatching eggs are looking very nice!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-dbKqkgKl-gpjRqaYLc39UfskR3Q7x53fMVFurNbYJugJn8ASGU0Dw_eSB0A0bLePegFR34RtghXZ-sPfdY-cuaOWJVTFgWXwdfet-WXVzx3BwD78aqiTxGGaW7wRK_LkLTW1GqIGw3U/s1600/IMG_6399.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-dbKqkgKl-gpjRqaYLc39UfskR3Q7x53fMVFurNbYJugJn8ASGU0Dw_eSB0A0bLePegFR34RtghXZ-sPfdY-cuaOWJVTFgWXwdfet-WXVzx3BwD78aqiTxGGaW7wRK_LkLTW1GqIGw3U/s320/IMG_6399.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Today i decided to attempt candling them with nothing more with a piece of cardboard and a strong flashlight. I have heard that it is nearly impossible to candle quail eggs, because the shell is so thick. But i decided to attempt anyways. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Candling is a process where incubating eggs are held over a bright light in a dark room, allowing one to see the developing chick inside.</b></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is the least speckled quail egg i could find, so thought it would be perfect.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You can't see much detail, but you can see the outline of the yolk, and the air pocket. Since i am a complete newbie at this, i have no idea if this egg is going to hatch or not. But still it was cool to be able to see this much.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I candled some of the other eggs, and i found this one with a pretty big crack in it. I am going to keep it in the incubator on the off chance that it will hatch. I think that since none of the white is pouring out, it should be fine.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9kpErLyd3Dq1433wBp2t0qMxPcvTkBmNLnECFS8Ib9sKjD22LUbwkaa-q11Gc9V3PDCKBUXYMBKoFwFNm87KR6qsT9lpEIiFRwCkgzh-q45uZPxbFiNt9jjOGAPikYrOAIV0CIx6MnVc/s1600/IMG_6328.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9kpErLyd3Dq1433wBp2t0qMxPcvTkBmNLnECFS8Ib9sKjD22LUbwkaa-q11Gc9V3PDCKBUXYMBKoFwFNm87KR6qsT9lpEIiFRwCkgzh-q45uZPxbFiNt9jjOGAPikYrOAIV0CIx6MnVc/s320/IMG_6328.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
These simple red and white feeders are generally used for baby chicks, but i think they will will be great for adult quail!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaO3wjKK-NmVap_gC2S03MqbJUi3cjRSUk5GpIfL6MvjJTC9n1YaGBFCwjx7oq6NYpfNRm6Oe2JVD7aHcopFGOu-gkxzOCNPmexKlUmR_31OdH7pCjFNogygTI2TnVkKLF9mrowz13S-I/s1600/IMG_6329.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaO3wjKK-NmVap_gC2S03MqbJUi3cjRSUk5GpIfL6MvjJTC9n1YaGBFCwjx7oq6NYpfNRm6Oe2JVD7aHcopFGOu-gkxzOCNPmexKlUmR_31OdH7pCjFNogygTI2TnVkKLF9mrowz13S-I/s320/IMG_6329.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
This is the only feed i could find with enough protein for growing quail. It has 24% protein, a good amount for baby quail. You can feed them chicken food but they will grow much slower and won't be as healthy.<br />
<br />
So there you are! 13 days until hatch.Cloverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10715053594306540946noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8144077275389032654.post-42620358545162626422012-11-16T13:51:00.000-08:002012-11-16T13:51:32.113-08:00The Hatching eggs.So they arrived earlier then i had expected! Instead of a mere 24 of them, i got sent 6 extras. Every single one of them is intact!<br />
<br />
This is how they came packed.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

They are all different beautiful colors!!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But since they arrived earlier than i thought they would, i didn't have the incubator set up. So after a few major temp swings, i got it to a nice 101 degrees.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Reasons they might not hatch:</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The major tempurature swing at the beginning! I hope I caught it in time and all of the eggs are okay!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It's a home made incubator. I have no idea how reliable it is...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It got shipped and who knows how they were tossed around!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have never done this before.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Reasons they may hatch.</b> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I am making sure to turn them 3 times a day.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
They were packed very nicely, and none of them were broken.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The incubator is at a really nice tempature now!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There are 30 of them so chances are at least a few will hatch.</div>
